Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease, caused by insufficient insulin excretion or problematic insulin activity usually referred as insulin resistance.

Diabetes is divided into three major clinical entities:

• type 1 diabetes which affects mostly children and youngsters and is characterized by the autoimmune destruction of the insulin secreting cells of the pancreas.
• Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, it usually affects overweight adults and is related with insulin resistance.
• The last major type of diabetes is the gestational form which is caused by insulin resistance during pregnancy.

Pre-diabetes is a condition where individuals are having high blood sugars caused by insulin resistance, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

In MedCare Clinic, we offer a holistic care for patients with diabetes. Annual foot check-ups, annual eye screen and annual nephropathy screening are some of our basic screening services. We also provide teaching on insulin and pump use, as well as teaching on treating hyperketonaemia/hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. Beside the prevention screen for diabetes complications, we also provide regular follow ups with our consultant with a specialist interest in diabetes. Consultations on lifestyle changes for diabetic patients, dietary advices and how to count your carbohydrates are also part of our service alongside with our external associate dietician.
