Diabetes Care

Dr Kleanthous Angeliki - DiabetesDiabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease, caused by insufficient insulin excretion or problematic insulin activity usually referred as insulin resistance.

Diabetes is divided into three major clinical entities:

  • type 1 diabetes which affects mostly children and youngsters and is characterized by the autoimmune destruction of the insulin secreting cells of the pancreas.
  • Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, it usually affects overweight adults and is related with insulin resistance.
  • The last major type of diabetes is the gestational form which is caused by insulin resistance during pregnancy.

Pre-diabetes is a condition where individuals are having high blood sugars caused by insulin resistance, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
